Appleseed is a Japanese animated film released in 2004 and is based on the manga series of the same name by Masamune Shirow. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world that has been rebuilt by the advanced technology of the city of Olympus. The city is made up of highly advanced cyborgs and humans who have created a utopian society in the aftermath of the third world war.
The main protagonist, Deunan Knute, is a highly skilled soldier who has been living in the badlands outside of Olympus. She is recruited by the city's leaders to join their police force and help maintain the peace in their society. After joining, she begins to see the cracks in their perfect world and discovers that the city's leaders have different plans for the rest of humankind.
Deunan becomes involved in a plot to overthrow the current leaders and restore freedom to humanity. Alongside her partner, Briareos, a cybernetically enhanced soldier, Deunan battles against the city's leaders and their army of robots to save humanity and preserve their freedom.
The film explores themes of artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and the human condition in a world that is striving for perfection at the cost of individuality. Appleseed features stunning visuals and action-packed scenes that combine traditional 2D animation with 3D CGI for an immersive viewing experience.
