Janet Frobisher is a successful novelist who lives in a remote house in the English countryside and has been separated from her husband, who is a criminal, for several years. She has become involved with her secretary's fiancé, a charming young man named Chris.
One day, Janet's husband unexpectedly shows up at her house. She is afraid that he will try to take her back to his life of crime, so she decides to poison him. She quickly disposes of the body, but her plan is complicated when one of her husband's criminal associates arrives at the house looking for him.
