The film is a modern retelling of the classic fairy tale "Cinderella" and stars Selena Gomez as Mary Santiago, the girl who leaves her Zune behind at the costume ball. Drew Seeley plays Joey Parker, the boy who danced with her and becomes smitten with her, leading him on a quest to find her. Mary lives with her evil stepmother and stepsisters, who are also dancers and constantly belittle her passion for singing. Meanwhile, Joey is a famous popstar who is on the verge of launching a new music video, but is lacking inspiration.
Through a series of mishaps and coincidences, Mary and Joey keep crossing paths, but Mary's identity remains a mystery to Joey. With the help of his best friend, Joey sets out to find Mary by hosting a dance competition, with the winner getting a chance to appear in his new music video. As Mary secretly enters the competition under a different name, the two continue to grow closer, but their relationship becomes complicated by the interference of Mary's cruel stepfamily and Joey's demanding career.
Ultimately, Joey and Mary reveal their true identities to each other and share a romantic dance at the end of the competition. Together, they realize that they can pursue their dreams and passions, even if it means letting go of expectations and going against societal norms.
