Annihilation is a science-fiction horror movie that was released in 2018. The movie follows a biologist named Lena, who is played by Natalie Portman. Lena's husband, a soldier, disappears during a mission into an area known as "The Shimmer," a mysterious zone that has been expanding for three years since a meteor crashed into a lighthouse, and the laws of nature do not apply. Lena is approached by a mysterious organization that is responsible for studying The Shimmer and recruiting her for a new expedition that will enter The Shimmer with the goal of learning what is happening and hopefully finding a way to stop it.
Lena joins a team of four other female scientists: the physicist Josie (Tessa Thompson), the paramedic Anya (Gina Rodriguez), the anthropologist Cass (Tuva Novotny), and their team leader, Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh). They make their way to the lighthouse, finding only a corpse and a video camera that reveals that the previous team's members had all descended into madness and killed each other. As they journey deeper into The Shimmer, they witness strange and terrifying mutations of the flora and fauna around them. They experience hallucinations and memory loss and begin to question their own sanity.
As they approach the center of The Shimmer, Lena and her team discover that it is a kind of alien realm that is slowly assimilating everything within it into new life forms. The cause was a meteor from space that hit a nearby lighthouse, causing an anomaly in the local DNA of all living organisms. The team learns that Lena's husband was the only survivor of his team and is now being used as a subject in an experiment into a kind of cloning, which is the root cause of the catastrophe.
As the team approaches the lighthouse, their sanity is tested, and they must face both physical and psychological challenges that threaten their lives and their sanity. Annihilation is a thought-provoking blend of science fiction and horror, with strong performances from the cast and stunning visual effects.
