Animal Kingdom is a crime thriller movie directed by David Michôd. The film follows the story of Joshua "J" Cody (played by James Frecheville), a 17-year-old boy who moves in with his grandmother, Janine "Smurf" Cody (played by Jacki Weaver), and her family after his mother dies of a heroin overdose. Smurf is the matriarch of the Cody family, which includes her three sons - Craig (played by Sullivan Stapleton), Baz (played by Joel Edgerton), and Pope (played by Ben Mendelsohn) - and her adopted son, Darren "Deran" Cody (played by Finn Little).
J is initially welcomed into the family, but soon realizes that they are involved in criminal activities, including armed robbery and drug trafficking. Baz and Pope are the leaders of the gang, but tensions rise as their criminal activities attract the attention of the police. Meanwhile, J becomes caught up in the dangerous world of the Codys, trying to navigate the complex web of family dynamics and criminal behavior.
As the movie progresses, the family begins to unravel under the pressure of police investigations, internal power struggles, and the threat of revenge from a rival criminal gang. J finds himself increasingly embroiled in the family's criminal activities, leading to a shocking and violent conclusion.
Animal Kingdom has received critical acclaim for its tense and gripping plot, as well as its powerful performances from the ensemble cast. The film was also adapted into a television series of the same name, which premiered in 2016 and ran for six seasons.
