The film, like the novel, is an allegory for the events leading up to the Russian Revolution and the Stalinist era in the Soviet Union. The animals on Manor Farm led by the pig Old Major (voiced by Pete Postlethwaite) overthrow their human farmer and establish a new society where all animals are equal and work together for the common good. The pigs Napoleon (voiced by Patrick Stewart) and Snowball (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) emerge as leaders and quickly begin to take control of the farm.
Snowball is eventually exiled and Napoleon takes full control, using his secret police force of attack dogs to enforce his rule. The pigs begin to manipulate the other animals, hoard resources for themselves, and rewrite the rules to benefit the elite. Meanwhile, the outside world is portrayed as skeptical of the animal revolution and unwilling to trade with them.
The film ends with the once-idealistic animal society descending into a nightmare of corruption and violence, with the pigs ruling over the other animals as tyrants. The film's animation is hand-drawn and brightly-colored, featuring anthropomorphized animals that are both appealing and disturbingly humanoid. The script adheres closely to the events of the novel, and some scenes may be too intense for younger viewers.
