Anxious Animals: Therapeutic Tails of Inner Turmoil

Animation,Comedy  Canada

Animal Behaviour is a Canadian animated short film, directed by Alison Snowden and David Fine. It was produced by the National Film Board of Canada and released in 2018. The film features five anthropomorphic animals who meet regularly in group therapy to discuss their personal issues.

The film's main character is Dr. Clement, a therapy dog who leads the group sessions. The other four animals are introduced through vignettes in which they experience their own personal problems.

Lorraine, the leech, has separation anxiety and is afraid of being alone. Cheryl, the praying mantis, has trouble attracting and keeping male partners. Todd, the pig, has an eating disorder and is addicted to sugar. Jeffrey, the bird, is riddled with guilt over his past mistakes.

As the animals open up about their problems, Dr. Clement tries his best to provide support and guidance. However, as the session progresses, it becomes clear that Dr. Clement may have his own issues to deal with.

The film is notable for its humour, as well as its depiction of animal behaviour. The characters are anthropomorphized, complete with human-like emotions and issues, but their animal instincts and behaviours are still present. For example, Todd the pig is seen gorging himself on cupcakes, while Cheryl the praying mantis devours her male partner after sex.

Animal Behaviour received critical acclaim upon its release, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2019. The film is a touching and often humorous exploration of the complexities of the human (and animal) psyche, wrapped up in a charming and visually appealing package.
