Dave Buznik (played by Adam Sandler) is a mild-mannered executive afraid of confrontations, who finds himself in an escalating confrontation with a fellow passenger on an airplane. Despite trying to calm things down, Dave is accused of assaulting the passenger and charged with assault. The judge in his case orders Dave to attend anger management therapy, or face jail time.
Dave is assigned to Dr. Buddy Rydell (played by Jack Nicholson), a highly unorthodox anger management specialist who has his own anger issues. At first, Buddy seems to be helping Dave with his anger issues, but as the sessions progress, Buddy's methods become increasingly crazed and abusive. He begins to interfere in every aspect of Dave's life, even moving into his apartment to monitor his progress.
As Dave's relationship with Buddy becomes more and more abusive, he begins to question whether the therapy is really helping him. Meanwhile, Dave's boss (played by John Turturro) starts to take advantage of Dave's perceived weakness and begins to bully him at work. Dave's frustration grows until finally, in a surreal climax, all of the pent-up rage explodes in a massive public outburst.
In the end, Dave realizes that Buddy's methods were not effective, and he confronts him in a final showdown. This confrontation finally frees Dave from his anger issues, and he is able to return to his normal life.
