Harry Angel, played by Mickey Rourke, is a grizzled private detective living in 1955 New York. Louis Cyphre, portrayed by Robert De Niro, hires Angel to find a missing singer named Johnny Favorite. As Angel begins his investigation, he discovers that the singer underwent a significant change as a result of his time serving in World War II. Angel must track down the various people Johnny saw in order to unravel the mystery of his disappearance.
As Angel delves deeper into the case, he finds that everything is not as it seems. People who are connected to Johnny are beginning to turn up dead, and he is being followed and threatened by mysterious figures. Along the way, Angel meets Epiphany Proudfoot, played by Lisa Bonet, a seductive young woman who claims to have known Johnny intimately.
As the mystery unravels, Angel is plunged into a dark world of voodoo, murder and sacrificial rituals. He begins to experience surreal and often terrifying hallucinations that suggest a haunting connection to his own past. The twist at the end of the film involves a shocking revelation that ties up all of the loosely connected threads in a satisfying and terrifying way.
Angel Heart is a dark, atmospheric and highly suspenseful thriller that draws on the themes of film noir and the supernatural. Mickey Rourke's performance is remarkable, playing a gritty and tormented character that sets the tone for the film's Gothic terror. Robert De Niro is also superb, playing a role that is both enigmatic and foreboding. The film remains a cult classic and is often regarded as one of director Alan Parker's finest works.
