Shattered Dreams: The Tragedy of Angel

Drama  Belgium

Angel is a 2018 drama film directed by Koen Mortier and starring Fatou N'Diaye as the titular character, a Senegalese sex worker living in Brussels. The film begins with Fatou's daily routine of attracting clients on the streets, negotiating prices and performing sexual favors in exchange for money.

One day, Fatou encounters a man who identifies himself as Thierry and pays her for an entire night. During their time together, Fatou learns that Thierry is a professional cyclist preparing for a big race. However, the next morning, Fatou finds Thierry dead in his hotel room, and she suddenly becomes a suspect in his untimely death.

As the investigation into Thierry's death unfolds, Fatou's own life takes a dark turn. Her apartment is raided by the police, and she is forced to flee. With nowhere to turn, Fatou must navigate the dangers of living on the streets and the judgment of society as a whole.

Throughout the film, we see glimpses of Fatou's past, including her struggles as a young girl growing up in Senegal and her journey to Brussels in search of a better life. Angel explores themes of race, sexuality, and systemic oppression, highlighting the human experiences of those who are often marginalized and forgotten. The film ends on a bittersweet note, with Fatou finding some sense of closure but still facing an uncertain future.
