Paula Henning, played by Franka Potente, is a hardworking medical student who dreams of becoming a successful physician. She is excited to start her studies at the prestigious Heidelberg University, but soon realizes that the school is not what she thought it would be. A group of students, led by a charismatic professor and surgeon, known as Professor Grombek, are involved in a secret society that goes against the principles of the Hippocratic Oath.
Paula becomes suspicious of the secretive group when she meets a young man named David, played by Benno Fürmann, on the train to Heidelberg. Shortly after their meeting, David dies under mysterious circumstances and his body is delivered to the dissection room where Paula is an assistant. She discovers that David's death was not natural and begins to investigate with the help of her dissection partner, Gretchen, played by Anna Loos.
