The movie is based on a novel of the same name by French author Christine Angot. It follows the story of Rachel, a young woman of modest origins, who falls in love with Philippe, a wealthy and charismatic Jewish lawyer. Despite the objections of their families and the social barriers that separate them, they start a passionate and tumultuous relationship that leads to the birth of their daughter Chantal.
However, over time, Philippe becomes increasingly possessive and abusive towards Rachel, forcing her to give up her aspirations and dedicate herself entirely to their family. As a result, Rachel becomes more and more isolated and unhappy, while Chantal grows up caught between the conflicting emotions and demands of her parents.
