An Angel at My Table is a 1990 drama film directed by Jane Campion. The film is based on the autobiography of the same name by New Zealand writer Janet Frame.
The movie follows Janet Frame from her childhood to her adulthood. Janet is a sensitive and imaginative child, but she is misunderstood by her peers and teachers. Her parents are poor, and their lack of resources makes it difficult for Janet to pursue her love of writing. Despite these challenges, she is eventually able to attend university and begins to gain recognition for her work.
However, Janet's success is short-lived as she is diagnosed with schizophrenia and is forced to spend several years in mental institutions. Through her struggles with mental illness, Janet becomes a brilliant writer and is eventually able to leave the institutions and continue her writing career.
The film captures the essence of New Zealand's landscape and culture, and the performances by the cast are excellent, especially by Kerry Fox, who plays Janet Frame. The movie received critical acclaim and was praised for its honest and sensitive portrayal of mental illness.
