In the movie, Fievel Mousekewitz and his family are Jewish-Russian mice living in a small village called Shostka in the late 19th century. They decide to emigrate to the United States after a group of mice from America visits and tells them about the "land without cats." Fievel is thrilled with the prospect of adventure, but his older sister Tanya is uneasy about leaving home.
During the journey to America, Fievel and his family face various challenges, including a fierce storm that separates them and ultimately leads to Fievel becoming separated from them in America. Alone and afraid, Fievel sets out to find his family, but soon discovers that the streets of New York City are not as welcoming as he had hoped.
Fievel befriends a streetwise mouse named Tony Toponi, who introduces him to the concept of "the American dream" and helps him navigate the dangers of the city. Along the way, Fievel encounters a cast of memorable characters, including a French pigeon named Henri, a charismatic Irish mouse named Bridget, and an opportunistic cat named Warren T. Rat.
As Fievel continues his journey to reunite with his family, he must also confront the harsh realities of immigrant life, including the abuse of workers and the exploitation of immigrants by unscrupulous businessmen like Warren T. Rat. Ultimately, Fievel's determination and bravery help him overcome these challenges and reunite with his family in a heartwarming conclusion.
An American Tail was released in 1986 and became a critical and commercial success, grossing over $84 million worldwide. The movie spawned several sequels, including An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991) and An American Tail: The Mystery of the Night Monster (1999), as well as a television series, Fievel's American Tails (1992). The movie is also notable for its iconic song, "Somewhere Out There," which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
