Amulet

Horror  United Kingdom

Amulet is a psychological horror film written and directed by Romola Garai. The film follows Tomaz (Alec Secareanu), an ex-soldier who is haunted by his past in a war-torn country. He is homeless in London and struggling to find a sense of purpose in his life. One day, he meets Magda (Carla Juri), a young woman who offers him a place to stay in her decaying house. Magda lives with her dying mother who is confined to an attic room, and Tomaz is tasked with helping to care for her.

As Tomaz spends more time with Magda, he begins to develop feelings for her. But he also starts to notice strange and disturbing things happening in the house. He hears strange noises and sees mysterious symbols etched into the walls. He becomes increasingly suspicious that something sinister is living alongside them.

As the story unfolds, the film takes a darker turn, with Tomaz's flashbacks to his traumatic military past becoming intertwined with the present. The film builds to a terrifying climax that will leave audiences questioning what they have just seen.

Amulet premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, where it received positive reviews from critics. The film was released in select theaters and on demand in July 2020.
