After the Amistad arrives in America, the Spanish crew members claim ownership of the slaves and demand they be returned to Cuba to face charges of mutiny and murder. However, abolitionists in the North see an opportunity to challenge the legality of slavery and rally behind the Africans' cause.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Cinque recounts the horrors of their capture and their brutal treatment on the ship. Baldwin argues that the Africans were kidnapped and illegally sold into slavery, and therefore have the right to fight for their freedom.
As the case reaches the Supreme Court, Adams delivers a powerful defense of the Africans' right to resist their captors and demand justice. Ultimately, the court rules in favor of the Africans, declaring them free men and allowing them to return to Africa.
