In America's Sweethearts, the married movie stars in question are Eddie Thomas (played by John Cusack) and Gwen Harrison (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones). The couple has been going through a very public split, and their latest film has become the center of attention for both the media and the studio they work for.
The film in question is a big-budget romantic comedy called Time Over Time, directed by the eccentric and unpredictable Hal Weidmann (played by Christopher Walken). During the film's post-production, Weidmann becomes dissatisfied with the final cut and decides to kidnap the only print of the film.
This puts the studio in a difficult position as they have to deal with the fallout of the film's kidnapping and the ongoing drama of Eddie and Gwen's relationship. The publicist tasked with handling the situation is Lee Phillips (played by Billy Crystal), who has to navigate the conflicting demands of the studio, the director, and the two warring stars.
As Lee attempts to track down the missing film and keep the media at bay, he also finds himself getting caught up in the romance between Eddie and Kiki (played by Julia Roberts), Gwen's much put-upon personal assistant. The two are forced to play a romantic couple in front of the press to promote the film, but their growing feelings for each other threaten to complicate matters further.
Throughout the film, the characters grapple with issues of fame, loyalty, and the complexities of the entertainment industry, and the question of whether or not Eddie and Gwen will reconcile keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
