The main character of American Psycho is Patrick Bateman, played by Christian Bale. Bateman is a successful investment banker in the 1980s who is obsessed with image, appearance, and status. Despite his seemingly ideal life, Bateman is secretly a sadistic murderer who indulges in bizarre and violent fantasies.
Throughout the movie, Bateman struggles to maintain his façade of normalcy while hiding his darker side from his colleagues and friends. He obsesses over his personal appearance and possessions, including designer clothing and a high-end apartment. He also fixates on the status symbols of his profession, such as business cards and restaurant reservations.
As Bateman's psyche deteriorates, he becomes increasingly violent and monstrous. He hallucinates conversations with a co-worker he has murdered, tortures and kills people in gruesome ways, and even confesses his crimes to a police detective who mistakenly believes him to be a different person entirely.
The movie is a critique of the shallow and materialistic culture of the 1980s, and the ways in which it can warp individuals' sense of self and reality. It is also a commentary on the nature of violence and evil, and how it can lurk beneath the polished veneer of the seemingly perfect life.
