The film follows the Nomura family as they are forcibly relocated to an internment camp in the Utah desert. The father, Mako, is a former baseball player who instills a love of the sport in his sons, Lane and Lyle. Despite the harsh conditions and uncertainty of their situation, the family finds solace on the baseball diamond.
As the Nomura brothers become involved in the camp's baseball team, they face discrimination from both their fellow Japanese-Americans and the white soldiers who guard their camp. However, they persevere and ultimately form a team that competes against other camps in the area.
In addition to the sports narrative, the film explores the emotional toll of internment on the Nomura family and other Japanese-Americans. Mako struggles with depression and guilt over his inability to protect his family, while Lane and Lyle confront their own identity as Japanese-Americans in a country that has turned against them.
