Amateur is a sports drama film directed by Ryan Koo. Terron Forte is a promising young basketball talent, and his potential is noticed by coaches and scouts who recruit him to an elite NCAA prep school in hopes of turning him into a future pro. However, as Terron navigates this new world of amateur athletics, he soon realizes that there is a darker side to the game.
Amateur also explores themes of race, class, and corruption in amateur athletics. Terron, who comes from a working-class background, must not only prove himself on the court but also contend with the politics and biases of those around him. As he climbs the ranks of the prep school basketball scene, he is increasingly pressured to sacrifice his values and play by the unwritten rules of amateur athletics.
The film stars Michael Rainey Jr. as Terron Forte, alongside a cast that includes Josh Charles, Sharon Leal, Brian White, and Corey Parker Robinson. It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews for its performances and themes.
