Reuben Feffer (played by Ben Stiller) is a risk assessment analyst who has just gotten married. On his honeymoon, he discovers that his wife is having an affair with a scuba diving instructor, causing him to become a paranoid, germaphobic recluse.
Upon his return to New York, Reuben runs into his former classmate, Polly Prince (played by Jennifer Aniston), who is the complete opposite of Reuben in every way imaginable. She is spontaneous, carefree, and impulsive. Despite his reservations, Reuben finds himself drawn to Polly and begins dating her, much to the chagrin of his friends and family who view her as a loose cannon.
Throughout the film, Reuben tries to balance his newfound relationship with Polly with his need for routine and predictability. He struggles to adapt to Polly's lifestyle, which includes trying exotic foods, salsa dancing, and taking risks in his personal and professional life. Meanwhile, Reuben's ex-wife tries to win him back, causing him to question his feelings for Polly.
In the end, Reuben learns to let go of his fears and embrace the unpredictability of life. He decides to pursue his dream of opening a new restaurant and reconciles with Polly, realizing that she is the one who makes him truly happy.
