Aloft is a drama film that explores the relationship between a mother, Nana Kunning (played by Jennifer Connelly), and her son, Ivan (played by Cillian Murphy). The movie is split into two timelines, one in the past and one in the present.
In the past, a tragedy occurs that tears the family apart. After the accident, Nana becomes a well-known artist who produces large installations in the wilderness. She also starts practising alternative medicine and becomes known as a healer. Ivan, on the other hand, grows up to be a peculiar and solitary man who develops a fascination with falconry. He is haunted by the memories of his childhood and the events that led to their separation.
In the present timeline, Jannia Ressmore (played by Melanie Laurent), a young journalist, tracks down Nana and Ivan. Jannia is researching a story about Nana's artwork and her healing practices. She manages to bring the two together, providing an opportunity for them to confront their past and reconcile their relationship. The encounter raises questions about the nature of art and the importance of connections to others.
The film is directed by Claudia Llosa and was highly acclaimed at film festivals, winning the Grand Prix at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. Aloft is a moving and atmospheric film that is both visually stunning and emotionally compelling.
