Alligator is a 1980 horror film directed by Lewis Teague and written by John Sayles. The film is about a young pet alligator that is flushed down the toilet by a family in Chicago. The alligator, which was fed laboratory rats that were pumped with growth hormones, manages to survive in the sewers and grows to a monstrous size.
After the alligator escapes from the sewers and begins attacking people, a determined police officer named David Madison is assigned to track it down. Madison partners with a reptile expert named Marisa Kendall, who believes that the alligator is a product of genetic experimentation. Meanwhile, a big-game hunter named Colonel Brock, who enjoys hunting exotic animals, arrives in town to capture the enormous reptile.
As the alligator continues to wreak havoc, Madison and Kendall work together to stop it. They discover that the animal has made its home in the city's sewage system, where it has been feeding on unsuspecting victims. Brock, however, has his own plans for the alligator, intending to capture it and sell it to the highest bidder.
The film culminates in a showdown between the alligator, Madison and Kendall, and Brock. Ultimately, the three manage to overpower the beast, but not before it has caused significant damage and loss of life throughout the city.
Alligator was praised for its impressive special effects and suspenseful storyline. It became a cult classic and spawned a sequel in 1991.
