After being rescued from her previous ordeal, Ripley is forced to face her fears again when she is approached by a group of company men who inform her that the planet where she and her crew encountered the alien species has since been terraformed and made habitable. However, communication with the colony has been lost and Ripley is asked to accompany a team of Marines to investigate.
The team includes seasoned and inexperienced soldiers who are skeptical of Ripley's claims about the aliens. Ripley is also introduced to a young orphan girl named Newt, who managed to survive the attack on the colony. As they explore the colony, they discover that the aliens have overrun it and have taken the colonists as hosts for their offspring.
The team is attacked by the aliens and many are killed in the ensuing battles. Ripley and the remaining survivors, including Newt and the Marine Corporal Hicks, set out to destroy the aliens and escape the planet. They are constantly pursued by the ruthless company representative Burke, who is intent on capturing an alien specimen to bring back to Earth for profit.
In a final showdown, Ripley fights the alien queen and manages to destroy her and the majority of the alien population. However, the colony is destroyed in the process and only a few survivors make it out alive. Ripley makes the ultimate sacrifice, launching herself and the alien queen out into space before the planet explodes.
