The film Alice Adams is a 1935 romantic comedy-drama directed by George Stevens and starring Katharine Hepburn in the titular role. The movie is based on the novel Alice Adams by Booth Tarkington.

Alice Adams is a beautiful and ambitious young woman who dreams of a better life beyond her lower-middle-class family's means. Her father Virgil, played by Fred Stone, and her brother Walter, played by Fred MacMurray, work at the local drugstore, while her mother, played by Ann Shoemaker, is obsessed with social climbing and desperately tries to manipulate her daughter's future.

Alice's life changes when she meets Arthur Russell, played by Fredric March, a wealthy and charming businessman. She falls in love with him and sees him as her ticket to a higher social status. However, Alice is ashamed of her family's humble background, and her attempts to impress Arthur and his family often lead to embarrassing situations.

Despite her mother's efforts to create a perfect image of their family, the dinner party turns into a disastrous affair with Alice's father getting drunk and behaving inappropriately. Alice's dreams of being accepted by the upper class are shattered, and she realizes the importance of being true to herself and her family.

Katharine Hepburn delivers a remarkable performance as Alice Adams, portraying her character's inner turmoil and insecurities with subtlety and grace. The film received critical acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Hepburn was also nominated for Best Actress, and Stevens received a nomination for Best Director.
