The Unraveling of Facades

Drama  United States of America

Albatross is a drama film that explores themes of race, class, and power dynamics set against the backdrop of 1959 New England. The film centers around a dinner party hosted by an artist named James who is married to a psychiatrist named Veronica. The couple invites a progressive, biracial couple named Patricia and Joe to the dinner, not realizing that the evening will expose deep-seated prejudices and secrets.

As tensions rise, the characters begin to reveal their true selves. James is revealed to be insecure and jealous of his wife's success as a psychiatrist, while Veronica's beliefs about psychology and mental illness are challenged by Patricia's own experiences. Joe, a jazz pianist, and his wife Patricia, a civil rights advocate, are marginalized by the others' prejudices and soon become the targets of insults and slurs.

As the night drags on, the characters become increasingly drunk and angry, and their true feelings start to come to the surface. The final confrontation exposes the fragile nature of the characters' lives and the false veneer of their social standing. Through the course of the evening, all the guests are forced to confront their own limitations and prejudices and are left changed by the experience.

The film stars Sterling K. Brown as Joe and Jessica Chastain as Patricia, with Alia Shawkat as a maid and Timothee Chalamet as the couple's son. The film is directed by Chris Weitz and produced by his brother Paul Weitz, and was released in 2022.
