Billy Covington, played by actor Robert Downey Jr., is a former pilot who lost his license due to his reckless behavior. He is recruited by his old friend Jack Neely, played by actor Bill Smitrovich, to join Air America, a private airline owned by the CIA.
At first, Billy is skeptical and unsure of what he has gotten himself into. However, he quickly becomes enamored with the exciting and dangerous lifestyle of his fellow pilots, including his roommate, the wild and unpredictable Gene Ryack, played by actor Mel Gibson.
As he becomes more involved with Air America, Billy discovers that the airline is not just transporting goods and people, but is also involved in illegal activities, including gun-running and opium smuggling. Billy struggles with his conscience as he becomes more embroiled in these schemes, especially when they directly affect innocent villagers and other non-involved parties.
Throughout the film, Billy tries to navigate both the dangers of his job and the moral quandaries it presents. Along the way, he becomes romantically involved with a local woman, played by actress Nancy Travis, who adds another level of complexity to the story.
Air America is a thrilling action-comedy with a great cast and many dramatic twists and turns. It provides a unique perspective on the Vietnam War and the CIA's involvement in it, all while showcasing the talents of its talented lead actors.
