Isabelle (played by Michelle Williams) is a kind-hearted and dedicated woman who runs an orphanage in Kolkata, India. But when the orphanage falls on hard times and is in need of money, Isabelle goes to New York City to meet with Theresa (played by Julianne Moore), a wealthy philanthropist who has promised to help fund the orphanage.
At the meeting, Theresa surprises Isabelle by inviting her to attend her daughter's upcoming wedding. Isabelle hesitantly agrees, and soon finds herself swept up in the opulent world of the wealthy in New York City.
But as the wedding approaches, secrets are revealed and long-buried resentments begin to surface. Isabelle is forced to confront painful truths about her past and present, while Theresa struggles to come to terms with her own complicated family history.
As they navigate the treacherous waters of love, guilt, and redemption, both women must make difficult choices that will impact their lives and those around them forever. Along the way, they will learn that sometimes the greatest gifts are the ones that come from unexpected places.
