Amy is a young woman who dreams of becoming a successful poet, but she finds it hard to get her work published. With mounting bills and pressure from her parents, Amy takes a job at Adult World, a sex shop in her hometown. She is reluctant to work there, considering it beneath her, but the job becomes an eye-opening experience for her. She meets various customers who have different stories and desires, and her views on sexuality and relationships start to evolve.
In her pursuit to become a poet, Amy idolizes Rat Billings, a renowned writer who lives in seclusion. Amy reaches out to Rat through his agent and secures a mentorship with him. She becomes more and more obsessed with Rat and starts to stalk him, eventually showing up at his house uninvited. Rat, who suffers from writer's block and depression, is initially annoyed by Amy's presence and dismisses her, but they eventually form an unlikely friendship.
Throughout the film, Amy struggles to balance her job at the sex shop, her mentorship with Rat, and her personal life. She delves deeper into adulthood and discovers more about herself and the world around her than she ever expected.
In the end, Amy has to come to terms with the fact that success doesn't come easy and that life is full of unexpected surprises. She learns that sometimes, the experience of life is what makes for the best poetry.
