Russ Millings is a felon who has just been released from prison after serving 21 years. Struggling to adjust to life outside of prison, Russ takes a job at a fast food restaurant and stays in a dingy motel room. One day, while taking out the trash, Russ discovers a live baby girl in a dumpster outside of his motel.
Being an ex-con, Russ is hesitant to call the police and turns to his boss for advice. After some discussion, Russ decides to take the baby and care for her himself. He names her Ella and begins to bond with her, finding purpose and meaning in his life for the first time in decades.
However, as Russ begins to navigate parenthood, he also deals with the challenges of being an ex-con in society.
