The protagonist of the film is a struggling writer named Charlie Kaufman, who is struggling to adapt the book "The Orchid Thief" by Susan Orlean into a screenplay. As he becomes more and more consumed with the task at hand, he finds himself growing increasingly disillusioned with the writing process and with his own abilities as a writer.
In an attempt to break through his creative block, Charlie becomes obsessed with Orlean herself, and begins stalking her and delving into her personal life in order to find inspiration for his screenplay. Along the way, he meets Orlean's lover, John Laroche, a plant enthusiast who is at the center of the book's narrative.
As Charlie's obsession with Orlean and Laroche grows, he begins to blur the lines between reality and fiction, and the film becomes a meta-fictional exploration of the creative process. Eventually, Charlie is able to complete his screenplay, albeit one that is vastly different from the book it was based on.
Overall, Adaptation. is a meditation on the creative process, the challenges of adaptation, and the blurred boundaries between art and life.
