Accattone

Drama  Italy

Accattone is a 1961 Italian neorealist drama film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. It tells the story of a pimp named Vittorio "Accattone" Cataldi (played by Franco Citti) who lives in the slums of Rome and runs a small gang of prostitutes. He is known for his street smarts and ruthless ways of making money.

One day, Accattone's main prostitute, Maddalena (played by Silvana Corsini), is caught stealing and is sent to prison. With his main source of income gone, Accattone is forced to confront his own flaws and vulnerability. He finds himself struggling to maintain his lifestyle and provide for himself as he becomes increasingly desperate and out of control.

As the story progresses, Accattone becomes involved with a young woman named Stella (played by Franca Pasut), who he hopes to groom as his next prostitute. However, his abusive and controlling behavior towards her ultimately leads to tragic consequences.

The film is noted for its gritty portrayal of the harsh realities of poverty and desperation in post-war Italy, and for its use of non-professional actors and real-life locations. It was Pasolini's first feature-length film and marked the beginning of his career as a filmmaker.
