The movie follows three different storylines that all intersect at different points. Along with Sachiko and Mr. Fukuda, the audience also follows the story of a married couple, Toshiaki and Yoshie, who have lost their passion for each other. Yoshie decides to join a dance class to spice up their relationship, but Toshiaki becomes jealous and suspects that she is having an affair.
In the third storyline, Kobato becomes interested in a male classmate named Miyamoto, who seems to be the object of Mr. Murata's affections. Kobato's feelings for Miyamoto become complicated when she discovers that he is actually gay and has been in a relationship with another male student.
As the different storylines weave in and out of each other, the characters come to face their own insecurities and desires. Sachiko's alien mission is called into question when she begins to fall in love with Mr. Fukuda, while Toshiaki and Yoshie must confront the problems in their own relationship. As for Kobato and Mr. Murata, their interactions lead to unexpected results that challenge their own perceptions of themselves.
