In A Thousand Words, Jack McCall, played by Eddie Murphy, is a successful literary agent who will do whatever it takes to close a deal. He sees Dr. Sinja as his next big client and sets out to sign him on without considering the consequences. However, when he disrespects a sacred Bodhi tree during a meeting with Sinja, the tree suddenly appears in his backyard.

Jack soon discovers that every word he speaks causes a leaf to fall from the tree, and when the last leaf falls, he will die. He tries to communicate what is happening to those around him, but no one believes him. He visits spiritual healers and experts in hopes of removing the curse, but nothing works.

As Jack's time with the tree dwindles, he begins to see the errors of his ways and the importance of truly connecting with others.
