A Sun

Crime,Drama  Taiwan

A Sun is a Taiwanese drama film directed by Chung Mong-Hong, which depicts the emotional struggles that a family goes through when they experience unexpected tragedy. The movie follows an ordinary Taiwanese family, consisting of a father, mother, and two children who are polar opposites. The older son, A-Ho, is a delinquent who constantly gets himself into trouble. He gets involved with a local gang and is sent to a juvenile detention centre, where he undergoes a painful transformation, both physically and mentally.

The younger son, A-Hao, is the complete opposite, being a diligent student with a bright academic future. However, his future and the family's stability are shattered when a tragic accident occurs, sending the family into a spiral of grief and guilt. The parents struggle to cope with the loss and the unexpected changes that ensued in their lives. They become distant from each other, while their individual flaws, pride and prejudices are exposed.

The father, who is a police officer, becomes incredibly harsh with his family, particularly his wife, played by Samantha Ko, who is portrayed as a traditional Taiwanese mother, trying to reconcile with the past. They struggle to overcome their individual misgivings as a family while trying to make sense of the tragedy that has befallen them.

The movie explores the concept of family relationships, forgiveness and the consequences of one’s actions. While the story is emotionally harrowing, it also highlights the resilience of the human spirit and how people can learn to overcome their struggles. The film is an emotional rollercoaster and a poignant commentary on the universal themes of grief. It offers a deep insight into the complexity of human emotions, choices and the elusive notion of redemption.
