A Summer's Tale is a French romantic drama film directed by Éric Rohmer. The film follows Gaspard, a young mathematician who takes a holiday in the coastal town of Dinard before starting his first job. He hopes to spend his time with his sort-of girlfriend, Lena, but she cancels on him at the last minute.
While exploring the town, Gaspard meets Margot, a feminist ethnology student who works in a local ice cream parlor. They strike up a friendship and spend time together exploring the town. Margot introduces Gaspard to Solène, a waitress who becomes infatuated with him.
Gaspard soon finds himself caught up in a love triangle between Margot and Solène. He is unsure of what he wants and struggles to make a decision. As the summer progresses, Gaspard's friendship with Margot deepens, but he cannot deny his attraction to Solène. Lena eventually arrives in Dinard, further complicating Gaspard's feelings.
The film explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery. It is known for its naturalistic dialogue and beautifully shot coastal scenery. A Summer's Tale is the third installment in Rohmer's Four Seasons series, which also includes A Tale of Springtime, A Winter's Tale, and An Autumn Tale.
