A Single Shot is a slow-burning thriller directed by David M. Rosenthal and based on the novel of the same name by Matthew F. Jones. The film stars Sam Rockwell as John Moon, a struggling hunter who accidentally shoots a young woman while hunting in a remote area of the Appalachian Mountains. Overcome by guilt and remorse, John tries to cover up the incident by burying the girl's body and keeping her belongings. However, this leads him deeper into the dark underbelly of rural crime, as he becomes the target of a group of dangerous and violent criminals who are also after the girl's valuable cache of money.
As John's situation grows increasingly dire, he must rely on his wits and survival instincts to evade his pursuers, who are always hot on his trail. Along the way, he crosses paths with a variety of eccentric and enigmatic characters, including a mysterious woman played by the enigmatic Kelly Reilly, who may hold the key to his salvation or his destruction. As tensions rise and the body count climbs, A Single Shot explores the dark recesses of human nature, where desperation and violence lurk just beneath the surface.
The film boasts a gritty and atmospheric visual style, as well as strong performances from its cast, including Rockwell, Reilly, and Jeffrey Wright, who plays a local sheriff who takes an interest in John's case. While it may not be the fastest or most action-packed thriller out there, A Single Shot maintains a taut and suspenseful tone throughout, and rewards patient viewers with a satisfying and haunting conclusion.
