The Crossroads of Love and Life

Drama  France

A Single Girl, also known as La Fille Seule in French, is a 1995 French drama film directed by Benoît Jacquot. The film follows the story of a young woman named Valérie (played by Virginie Ledoyen), a hotel maid who discovers that she is pregnant. Over the course of a day, Valérie faces a series of intense and difficult decisions as she tries to navigate her personal and professional life.

Valérie's biggest dilemma is whether or not to keep the baby. She is unsure if she is ready to become a mother and worries about the impact that having a child would have on her career and her relationship with her boyfriend. As she considers her options, she must also contend with the reality of her job as a maid, which is physically demanding and requires her to constantly interact with hotel guests.

Throughout the film, Valérie experiences a series of emotional ups and downs as she grapples with these complex decisions. She confides in her boyfriend Rémi (played by Benoît Magimel) and her boss (played by Dominique Valadié), both of whom have their own opinions about what she should do. As Valérie tries to come to a decision, she reflects on her own life and the choices she has made up until this point.

A Single Girl is a powerful and thought-provoking film that explores the complexities of modern womanhood and the difficult choices that women are often faced with. With a strong central performance by Virginie Ledoyen and beautiful cinematography by Caroline Champetier, the film is a provocative and emotional exploration of one woman's journey towards self-discovery and empowerment.
