A Simple Life is a 2011 Hong Kong drama film directed by Ann Hui. The film tells the story of a middle-aged man named Roger (played by Andy Lau) who works as a film producer and his relationship with the family's elderly maid and nanny, Ah Tao (played by Deanie Ip). Ah Tao has been working for Roger's family for sixty years and has taken care of him since he was a child. One day, Ah Tao suffers a stroke and has to be hospitalized. Roger decides to take care of her in his own home, and as he does so, their roles reverse, and he becomes the caregiver.
The film depicts the changing dynamics of their relationship as they both adjust to their new roles. It also explores the themes of aging, family, and tradition. A Simple Life was inspired by the real-life relationship between the film's producer, Roger Lee, and his family's maid, who had been with his family for over sixty years. The film was critically acclaimed and won numerous awards, including the Best Actress award for Deanie Ip at the 68th Venice International Film Festival.
