A Royal Affair is a Danish historical drama film directed by Nikolaj Arcel. The movie is based on the true story of Caroline Mathilde, the Queen of Denmark, who was married to King Christian VII in the late 18th century. The movie centers around the relationship between Caroline Mathilde and Johann Friedrich Struensee, the German physician who becomes the King's personal physician and advisor.
Caroline Mathilde, played by Alicia Vikander, is portrayed as a young, naive queen who is unhappy in her marriage. She starts an affair with Struensee, played by Mads Mikkelsen, who introduces her to the ideas of the Enlightenment. Struensee is a progressive thinker who is passionate about social reform and uses his influence to make changes to the laws and policies of Denmark. These changes include the abolition of torture, the establishment of freedom of the press, the introduction of education for all, and the lifting of restrictions on trade.
However, their relationship is not accepted by the conservative members of the court, who view Struensee as a dangerous radical. The situation becomes increasingly tense as Struensee becomes the de facto ruler of Denmark, alienating the King's advisors and supporters. The movie ultimately ends in tragedy, with Struensee facing charges of treason and Caroline Mathilde being exiled from Denmark.
The movie has been praised for its historical accuracy and the strong performances of its cast. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards and won Best Screenplay at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival.
