A Rage in Harlem is a 1991 American crime-comedy film based on the 1957 novel of the same name by Chester Himes. The film follows the story of Imabelle, a beautiful and cunning woman who works as a con artist and has recently become a gangster's moll.
After a shootout with the police, Imabelle flees with a trunk full of gold to Harlem, where she hopes to hide out until things calm down. However, she quickly realizes that the rest of the gang, as well as a number of other dangerous characters, are on her trail and will stop at nothing to get their hands on the gold.
As Imabelle navigates the treacherous streets of Harlem, she meets and becomes involved with a sweet but naive man named Jackson. Jackson is a pudgy momma's boy who dreams of making it big in the city, but has thus far been unsuccessful. Together, Imabelle and Jackson embark on a wild adventure through Harlem, trying to stay one step ahead of the people who are after them.
Directed by Bill Duke, A Rage in Harlem stars Forest Whitaker as Jackson, Robin Givens as Imabelle, and Gregory Hines as Goldy, another member of the gang. The film was successful both critically and commercially and is often cited as one of the better adaptations of Himes' work.
