A Quiet Place is a 2018 horror movie directed and co-written by John Krasinski. The film stars Krasinski and Emily Blunt as Lee and Evelyn Abbott, a couple who struggle to protect their family in a post-apocalyptic world where monstrous creatures hunt humans by sound. The story is set in rural New York and follows the Abbott family as they navigate their lives in near total silence.
The opening scene of the movie reveals that most of the world's population has been wiped out by these sound-hunting creatures. Lee and Evelyn have three children, the oldest of whom, Regan, is deaf. The Abbotts communicate through sign language and have developed a series of tactics to remain silent, such as walking on sand paths and using light signals to communicate.
The family's tranquility is disrupted when Evelyn becomes pregnant. They worry about the noise the baby will make when it arrives, and their fears are justified when the family encounters the creatures while scavenging for supplies. Lee and Evelyn must fight to protect their family, knowing that even the smallest noise can attract the creatures.
The sound design of A Quiet Place is one of its most significant features. Much of the movie is silent, except for a tense, nerve-wracking score by composer Marco Beltrami. The visual effects are also notable, with the creatures rendered with a mix of CGI and practical effects.
A Quiet Place was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $340 million worldwide against a production budget of just $17 million. Its popularity led to a sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, which was released in May 2021.
