In A New Leaf, Henry Graham is a wealthy but careless playboy who spends his days and nights pursuing pleasure and avoiding responsibility. However, when his lawyer informs him that he has squandered all of his money and will soon be destitute, Henry finds himself at a loss for what to do.
Desperate to maintain his upper-class lifestyle, Henry concocts a plan to marry a rich woman and inherit her fortune. He sets his sights on Henrietta Lowell, a socially awkward, albeit extremely wealthy botanist. Despite her quirks, Henry believes he can manipulate Henrietta into marriage and quickly secures her hand.
However, as their marriage progresses, Henry realizes that Henrietta is not as easy to control as he had hoped. She insists on managing their finances and begins to notice the inconsistencies in Henry's behavior. As their relationship develops, Henry finds himself falling in love with Henrietta, and he must choose between his desire for wealth or true love.
A New Leaf is a comedic film written and directed by Elaine May, who also stars alongside Walter Matthau as Henry Graham. The film explores themes of class, love, and the consequences of living a life without consequence.
