A Monkey in Winter is a 1962 French comedy-drama film directed by Henri Verneuil and starring Jean Gabin, Jean-Paul Belmondo, and Suzanne Flon. The film is based on a novel by Antoine Blondin.

The story revolves around Albert, a middle-aged, former alcoholic who owns a small hotel in a coastal town in Normandy. Albert has stopped drinking and dreaming after his wife left him, leaving him bitter and disillusioned.

One winter evening, a young man named Gabriel comes to stay at Albert's hotel. Gabriel is trying to forget his lost love in alcohol, and Albert initially tries to discourage him from drinking. However, he eventually gives in and allows Gabriel to continue drinking.

As the night progresses, the two men become drunk and end up having a wild and exciting night. They go to a gambling den, get into a fight with the locals, and pick up two women. The night ends with a car chase and a crash, but Albert and Gabriel end up safe and sound.

The next day, Albert realizes that he has been reawakened to the thrill of life and decides to start dreaming again. Gabriel, on the other hand, realizes that he needs to stop drinking and pursue his lost love.

The film received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and cinematography. Jean Gabin and Jean-Paul Belmondo were praised for their chemistry on screen, and the film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival.
