Resurrecting Melodies: A Folk Revival on Broadway

Comedy,Music  United States of America

A Mighty Wind is a 2003 mockumentary film directed by Christopher Guest. The film follows the reunion of three fictional folk music groups, the Folksmen, the New Main Street Singers and Mitch & Mickey, who are all brought together for a benefit concert in memory of a legendary concert promoter who recently passed away.

The Folksmen consist of three members, played by Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, who were once a popular folk group in the 1960s but have since disbanded. Mitch & Mickey are a former romantic duo played by Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, who have not performed together in years due to a tragic incident that ended their relationship. The New Main Street Singers, played by John Michael Higgins and Jane Lynch, are a new-age folk group with 12 members who perform with a more commercial sound.

The concert, which takes place at New York City's Town Hall, reunites the three groups for the first time in years and leads to a series of hilarious and touching moments as the musicians reconnect and reminisce about their past. Along the way, they also encounter various quirks and oddities of the folk music industry.

The film features a number of original songs, including the Oscar-nominated "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" performed by Levy and O'Hara. A Mighty Wind has been praised for its clever writing, impressive ensemble cast, and authentic portrayal of the folk music scene.
