The film follows a group of young American soldiers, led by Lieutenant Ware (Ethan Hawke), who are sent on a mission to scout the German front lines in the Ardennes Forest during World War II. The group is made up of a diverse mix of soldiers, including musicians, intellectuals, and artists, who all share a sense of disillusionment about the war and a desire to survive.
While on their mission, the squad stumbles upon a group of German soldiers who are also looking for a way out of the war. Despite the initial tension and suspicion between the two groups, they eventually agree to a temporary truce and decide to spend Christmas together in an abandoned chateau.
As the soldiers get to know each other, they discover that they have more in common than they originally thought. They share stories about their families and their hopes for the future, and even exchange gifts. Lieutenant Ware develops a close bond with the German commander, Captain Knopf (Jurgen Prochnow), who reveals that he was once a university professor and is also disillusioned with the war.
However, the truce is short-lived when a miscommunication between the two groups leads to a firefight, and both sides are forced to confront the reality of their situation. The soldiers must fight for their survival and confront the harsh realities of war, including loss and sacrifice.
A Midnight Clear is a poignant examination of the futility of war and the human capacity for compassion and empathy, even in the most dire circumstances. It is a powerful reminder that even in times of conflict and division, there is always the possibility for connection and understanding.
