Redemption: The Architect's Last Act

Drama  United States of America

A Master Builder is a drama film based on the play by Henrik Ibsen and directed by Jonathan Demme. The main character, Halvard Solness, is an accomplished architect who has built many grand structures but is haunted by the fear of being surpassed by a younger generation. Solness is also egotistical and cruel towards his wife, Aline, and his employees, including his assistant, Ragnar.

As he nears the end of his life, Solness begins to re-evaluate his past actions and wants to make amends with those he has wronged. He seeks forgiveness from Aline, who has been tormented by his cruelty and the loss of their children, and attempts to support and encourage Ragnar in his own architectural aspirations.

Solness also reunites with a former lover, Hilda, who encourages him to confront the demons of his past. As their relationship becomes more complicated, Solness struggles with the possibility of redemption and the consequences of his past behavior.

The film examines themes of power, regret, and mortality, and features powerful performances by Wallace Shawn as Solness, Julie Hagerty as Aline, and Lisa Joyce as Hilda. The film was released in 2014 and received mixed reviews, with many praising the performances but criticizing the slow pacing and lack of emotional connection.
