on the plot.

The handyman, named Jack, lives a simple life in New York City and has never pursued a career in writing. He is mistaken for the famous writer, named Martin, due to their resemblance and similar names. The university hosting the keynote address has been trying to get Martin to speak for years but he is notoriously reclusive and never makes public appearances.

Feeling pressured to keep up the pretense, Jack goes along with the mistaken identity and begins to answer questions and give advice on writing during the Q&A session. He makes a connection with a literature professor named Dr. Claire, who is impressed by his knowledge and insight.

As the day progresses, Jack begins to enjoy the attention and the respect he is receiving as Martin. However, his lies start to catch up with him as Martin's estranged daughter shows up unexpectedly and threatens to blow his cover. Additionally, a suspicious journalist begins digging into Martin's past and discovers inconsistencies in Jack's story.

In the end, Jack realizes that he must come clean and confess to the deception. He apologizes to Dr. Claire and to the university for deceiving them and explains that he simply wanted to feel important. Despite the initial shock and disappointment, the university forgives him and Dr. Claire invites him to join a writing group that she leads. Jack accepts and begins pursuing his own writing career, no longer needing to live a little white lie.
