Marley Corbett (Kate Hudson) is a successful advertising executive living in New Orleans. She's also a guarded woman who has never allowed herself to fully commit to any romantic relationship. One day, Marley receives some shocking news: she has been diagnosed with an aggressive and terminal form of colon cancer.
As she starts her treatment, Marley meets her oncologist, Dr. Julian Goldstein (Gael García Bernal). Despite their initial awkwardness, the two develop a strong connection and a playful banter. Marley also reunites with her childhood friend, Peter (Peter Dinklage), who has always been in love with her but has never acted on it.
As Marley's condition worsens, she starts to question if she's lived her life to the fullest. She wants to experience the joy of falling in love before it's too late but is also afraid of the vulnerability and pain that comes with it.
Things get complicated when Julian admits to having feelings for Marley. While she's intrigued, Marley is hesitant to start a relationship with him, afraid of hurting him and also of getting hurt herself. At the same time, Peter tries to convince Marley to give him a chance and professes his love to her.
Marley eventually decides to take a chance on Julian and the two start a passionate and loving relationship. However, as her condition worsens, Marley becomes more and more resentful of the limited time they have together. She pushes Julian away and even takes up smoking again.
In the end, Marley comes to terms with her mortality and the life she's lived, and she finds solace and support in her family and friends. She also realizes that the love she shared with Julian was worth the risk, and she dies peacefully in his arms.
