A Late Quartet follows the story of the Fugue String Quartet, consisting of cellist Peter Mitchell, first violinist Daniel Lerner, second violinist Robert Gelbart, and violist Juliette Gelbart. The group has been performing together for over 25 years and is on the cusp of performing their 25th-anniversary concert.
However, their future hangs in the balance when Peter is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The group struggles to come to terms with the news, and Peter's illness forces them to confront long-standing conflicts and tensions that have been brewing under the surface for years.
As the quartet rehearses for their upcoming concert, Daniel becomes romantically involved with Juliette, which creates further tension and jealousy among the group. Meanwhile, Robert is struggling with his own personal issues, including a failing marriage and a desire to branch out from the quartet.
As the day of the concert approaches, the group must come together to overcome their differences and deliver a performance that will honor their legacy. They must navigate their egos, suppressed emotions, and uncontrollable passions to keep their friendships and collaboration intact.
